Leo Koenig was born in New York City in 1977, but was raised in Munich, the son of Prof. Kasper Koenig, (one of Europe's foremost curators and director of the Ludwig Museum in Cologne) and Ilka Koenig, owner of Ilka Koenig Buchhandlung in Munich.
